One of the reasons why racing games are so popular is because it allows ordinary people to virtually step into the driver’s seat of powerful cars as if they were professional racers. But what if the experience was flipped a bit and you had an actual professional driver taking control of a real race car remotely? That’s exactly what happened at a recent GT Sport promotional event made possible by Nissan.
The famous car company modified a GT-R model (dubbing it the Nissan GT-R/C) with robots and a microcomputer. Behind the controls was Jann Mardenborough, a professional racer. He literally was behind the controls; a DualShock 4 controller was used to drive the car while Mardenborough followed along in a helicopter. If this isn’t what you call over-the-top awesomeness, then I don’t know what is. Welcome to the future!
This whole event was planned by Nissan and Sony to celebrate the launch of GT Sport, which will be coming exclusively to PS4 soon. Nissan has been partnered with the Gran Turismo series since the first entry on the original PS1 20 years ago. Hats off to these guys; this was very creative!
Gran Turismo Sport will be racing onto PS4 on October 17th.
Having been introduced to video games at the age of 3 via a Nintendo 64, A.K has grown up in the culture. A fan of simulators and racers, with a soft spot for Nintendo! But, he has a great respect for the entire video game world and enjoys watching it all expand as a whole.
