I’ve been interested in playing Until Dawn for some time, but I was hesitant to spend the money on an interactive movie. I play games to run around in open worlds and climb towers that unlock map icons, not to watch people talk to each other and/or get violently murdered. Okay, so there are a lot of games where people get violently murdered, but you take my meaning.
Until Dawn, however, was on sale for $5.99, so I decided that now was the time. I added it to my cart and went to check out. Alas, I only had $5.50. “Not a big deal!”, I thought to myself. “I only need to add another fifty cents.” Upon attempting to checkout, however, I was met with the fact that, in order to do so, I would need to add $5 from Paypal, at which point a single dollar would be taken from my current $5.50 balance.
Why am I talking about this? Well, it’s because I shouldn’t have to spend five bucks just because the game was fifty cents more than I had in my wallet. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “But, you’re going to spend that money in the future, so what does it matter if you add the funds now or later?”
Well, hypothetical person that I just invented, let me tell you that most of my purchases are of a physical nature and I very rarely purchase games on PSN. Cheap games on sale, especially indies make this an even more present problem, as those games are typically cheaper and can oftentimes go on sale for under $5.
Therefore, when I do purchase Playstation games digitally I just do it on Amazon so that I don’t have to beef up my wallet in five dollar increments. So, the question stands; did I bite the bullet, add the $5 and purchase Until Dawn? No. No, I did not. I would have, but I knew that if I did, I’d have $4.50 sitting in my wallet for months to come and I didn’t want to yet again be prompted to add $5 to my wallet.
My point in all this is that this is arbitrary and unnecessary. I just want to buy games, not make a deal every time I make that decision. Incidents like this just make me not want to buy things on PSN, which I rarely do. Therefore, I suppose that $5.50 is going to sit in my wallet for the foreseeable future and Until Dawn isn’t going to be played for some time. Your move, Sony.
