It would appear that developers Gearbox Software are set to unveil their new game imminently. On their Twitter, a teaser image with a highway sign for Boston, Mass. points towards a PAX East reveal.

The interesting part is the cutoff “3” at the top right, leading many to believe it is a Borderlands 3 tease.
March 28 also happens to be the day Gearbox is holding their panel at PAX East’s biggest hall. It promises “never-before-seen reveals, exclusives, and surprises.” The event will also be streamed live for global audiences.
The first-person shooter franchise has been dormant since 2015’s Handsome Collection (with the exception of Borderlands 2 VR). In a climate with multiple shared world shooters like Destiny and Anthem, it would be interesting to see how Borderlands shape up.
Gearbox’s next game is expected to be published by 2K. Its parent company, Take-Two has been hyping up a “highly anticipated” sequel for a period now, although there has been no official announcement.
Of course, speculation is unavoidable, with many coming to the conclusion that the game will be Borderlands 3, or however the sequel will be named to the shooter. Gearbox has also confirmed that a new Borderlands is in the works.
Gearbox’s last release was Battleborn back in 2016, which ultimately underperformed despite it being the company’s “biggest investment ever”. The game has since ceased its updates, although servers are still online.
