Supermassive Games’ horror adventure Until Dawn was a breakout success when it first came out in 2015 for the PS4, and thoughts about a sequel were definitely on the studio’s mind. However, following the spinoff, Rush of Blood, and a prequel, The Inpatient, it seems a proper sequel is never going to happen.
CEO and executive producer, Pete Samuels, was speaking to Game Informer about how the team wants to move on and tell new tales, and their new project, Man of Medan, which is also part of the Dark Pictures anthology, is just that.
“After Until Dawn, [many] started to request a sequel, and it still happens today, so we know there is a fanbase that likes this kind of thing,” Samuels said.
“A lot of [creating the anthology] is about our desire to serve that fanbase from our perspective and to serve us ourselves in what we love to do, which is do more stories and characters, and do it more frequently than one or two every few years,” he added.
Tom Heaton, who is the game director, also added that working on this anthology was more exciting for the studio due to the freedom and opportunity to try a new subject with new characters in each story. “You’re not tied to historical characters that you have to use,” he said.
With the eight playable characters in Until Dawn and the multiple endings, it would be a massive undertaking to create a sequel. “If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived,” producer Dan McDonald said. “I mean we could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.”
The first of the anthology, Man of Medan follows four young Americans and a ship captain in the South Pacific on a diving trip in search of a World War II-era wreck. Things get messy, and the four face “unimaginable stress and terror” as they try to escape the ship. Like Until Dawn, players will be forced to make choices that will determine the fates of the characters.
Shawn Ashmore of X-Men fame and Pip Torrens from The Force Awakens will portray two of the characters.
