Aksys Games and Mikage have announced that they’re working together on a new original project that’s set to launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation VR. The new partnership between the developer and publisher was revealed over the weekend, with more details about it to follow at Anime Expo 2020, which runs from July 2 to July 5 2020 in Los Angeles, California. This new project is said to have a release window in North America of 2021, so it’s still a long way off yet.

While we currently have no details about whether this project will see a new IP, or involve an already established one that will also be present at Anime Expo 2020, we do know that there are two great companies behind it. Mikage is a games development studio formed by Ryohei Mikage, former CEO of Imageepoch, who has worked on games like Luminous Arc, Sol Trigger, 7th Dragon, Stella Glow, and Time and Eternity in the past. Aksys Games is a publisher that is probably best known for their work on the Guilty Gear series, though they have had a hand in many others.

One of the most interesting things about this news is that these companies are working on a game for the PlayStation 4 that will release once the PlayStation 5 is in the hands of the public. There is much speculation about development being wound down for the console once its successor is out, but this is one project at least that will span both console generations. The game is also meant to be launching, outside of the PlayStation family, for Nintendo Switch and Steam, indicating that this new project could be much larger than it first appears. This adds some credence to the idea that the project will use an already established IP as a basis to gain fans, rather than starting fresh with a new IP.
