After a decent showing at E3 2019, it would appear that both Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are ready to show the world what Marvel’s Avengers is all about. At Gamescom 2019, a full capture of the “A-Day” prologue mission was finally released, showing 18 minutes of superhero action.
This is the same demo that was seen behind-closed-doors at E3, and see players controlling five of the Avengers – Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow. The mission works as an introduction to the story as well as for each of the characters. Iron Man can take to the air and fire repulsor beams, Thor uses Mjolnir to great melee effect, the Hulk smashes, Captain America likes to throw his shield around, and Black Widow combines both fists and guns.
There is substantial time spent with each character, culminating in an extended boss battle with Taskmaster as Black Widow.
Finishing the prologue will open the world of Marvel’s Avengers, giving players access to a Helicarrier and the ability to jump into both single-player and co-op missions. The campaign will remain linear and characters locked, whereas in the multiplayer online, each Avenger can be customised with their own unique skills and cosmetics.
Marvel’s Avengers will arrive on the PS4 and other platforms on May 15, 2020.
In other Avengers news, Sony has now formally acquired the developers of the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Studios, and expanded the first-party lineup to 14 studios now.
