Once we got a glimpse of the fabled Keanu Reeves as the character, Johnny Silverhand in CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, the question was inevitable. Will we be able to romance the Samurai’s singer and guitarist as part of our adventures? Unfortunately, the answer appears to be a no, which we know will be a huge disappointment to some.
In an interview with the Video Games Chronicle, Level Designer Max Pears stated that “Keanu plays a crucial role in the game, but as for the option to romance him, I don’t believe you can.”
The same interview touched on the various character interactions that players will have as V, be it as a male, female, or of a more fluid nature. In an increasingly aware landscape of gamers, CD Projekt Red is banking on the fact that players in Cyberpunk 2077 will be referred to as V to avoid any potential gender mishaps during dialogue.
We really want to make sure players get the representation that they want. In the genre of Cyberpunk as well, it asks such deep questions about what it means to be human, let alone what it means to define your gender. Having that customisation match how you feel is your representation of how you feel… it’s important for us and it’s important to the lore of this world too.
In a deep game such as Cyberpunk 2077, there is bound to be plenty of scenarios for gamers to chew through, and the importance of not alienating any of their audience is huge to the developers.
