Survival horror has made a huge comeback in the last couple of years. One of the most anticipated titles of this year that also happens to fall into the genre is The Evil Within. With Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil fame behind the wheel, many have high hopes for the horror title set to release on October 14th on both the PS3 and PS4. Of course, all good directors need a good team if they want any hope of succeeding, and according to a recently released video, Mikami’s creation is in capable hands.
The decision to put Mashahiro Izumi in charge of sound design was a…sound one, literally. Ok, I admit I deserve to be executed for that pun, but let’s get back to Izumi and his brilliantly creative technique. Apparently, the key to making gory sound effects is eating food. I’m serious. Izumi ate various foods, from cantaloupe to marshmallows, to noodles and potato chips in front of a microphone, and the result is impressive to say the least. While the maiming of flesh is seen on screen, rest assured that no living creatures were harmed in the making of those sounds. Izumi deserves a raise, and possibly an all expenses paid gym membership.
