With just a couple of weeks to go until Mortal Kombat 11 arrives, it will mark a return to the NetherRealm’s signature fighting franchise. While the studio has occasionally branched out into other properties, like Injustice, Mortal Kombat remains their main draw.
In an interview with Game Informer, Creative director and franchise co-creator Ed Boon, however, stated he would like the studio to branch out even more.
I think our studio has a number of good games in it that are completely unrelated to Mortal Kombat. While we love making Mortal Kombat games, we would love to expand into other genres, other IP, other things like that, for sure.
The massive success of Mortal Kombat X, Boon suggested, is probably one important factor NetherRealm has not shifted their focus to one of their other ideas. MKX has sold 11 million copies, making it the studio’s best-selling game.
Boon also added that “one of the challenges of having your last game sell the most of any other game, is … it’s hard to just stop from there and say we’re done. But certainly, we could take a break from it and build up anticipation for a future title.”
