We have finally gotten a release date for CD Projekt Red’s upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, and its April 16 release puts it undoubtedly near the end of the current console generation.
With the next-generation consoles on the horizon, with both Sony PlayStation and Microsoft officially unveiling details, the question now turns towards if Cyberpunk 2077 will be a cross-generational release.
Nothing concrete has been put into place yet, but the studio is exploring the possibility of next-gen versions of the game, according to Senior Level Designer, Miles Tost.
In an interview with GamerHubTV, Tost emphasised CD Projekt Red’s focus on the current generation consoles and PC for Cyberpunk 2077, while for the next generation, it is a “maybe”, and it is not an “area of interest right now.”
Of course we are looking at what is happening in the games industry because we are part of it, and we need to always look forward. But at the same time, we are a studio that really focuses on the work we’re doing now. So our full attention is on current-gen consoles and PC. Who knows?
When the time comes for it, maybe [we’ll support next-gen consoles]. But until [Cyberpunk 2077 launches in April 2020], we have a thing to do. And as far as what I have heard, the next-gen consoles … Xbox just announced holiday 2020. So it’s not really a concern for us now because it comes way after where we want to release our game.
The PS5 has not confirmed a release window and Xbox’s next console launching in Holiday 2020, there is plenty of time for the developers to consider porting Cyberpunk 2077 over. Analyst firm Cowen & Company has also released a report that seems to suggest Sony’s next console will be expected for Fall/Holiday as well.
Both consoles have been touted to have backwards compatibility, so Cyberpunk 2077 is likely to be playable, but a proper port that takes advantage of all the power the new consoles possess will be a more attractive prospect for the developers. The potential of what the game could be is enticing, to say the least.
Actor Keanu Reeves took center stage at E3 2019 with his unveiling as Johnny Silverhands, and Cyberpunk 2077 will release on PS4 and other platforms on April 16, 2020.
