Virtual Reality technology has been making rounds in the gaming industry for several years at this point. But, for the most part, it’s had a hard time finding any real footing. That is until now at least. It looks like Sony has managed to crack the code as the company recently revealed that the PlayStation VR headset has sold over 3 million units worldwide.
The PSVR headset launched back in 2016 4 just a month before the PS4 Pro. Since then, the headset has garnered the attention of several studios both big and small, and of course, Sony’s own first-party studios also put some muscle behind it. One notable example would be the VR mode in Gran Turismo Sport.

Due to the massive reach of the PS4 along with the prestige of the PlayStation brand as a whole, the PSVR has been able to capture the attention of many. It also helps that it’s always been the most affordable option for ‘true’ gaming VR, especially when compared to the offerings on PC. And since neither Nintendo or Microsoft have made any real efforts for adapting VR tech into their consoles, this has further helped the PSVR to settle into a comfortable little spot pretty much unbothered by anything else.
NPD analyst Mat Piscatella confirmed that with Sony’s announcement of PlayStation VR’s sale numbers. it turns out that about 4% of the entire PS4 userbase owns a PSVR headset. That’s not a massive adoption rate, but it’s still commendable nonetheless.
After pulling off numbers like this in less than two years on the market, it will be interesting to see how the platform will grow. Sony is already preparing for the future of PlayStation with the PS5 on the ever-nearing horizon. It now seems more likely than ever that PSVR will also advance into a new generation. The PS5 will, of course, be even better equipped to handle the demanding technology, so things are really looking up for the headset.
