Sony will be opening a new PlayStation development studio in Malaysia in 2020.
GamesIndustry.biz broke the news earlier today. The new studio will focus on providing art and animation services to assist with other first-party studios in the development of PlayStation exclusive games. This means that the studio will assist studios like Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sony Santa Monica, Media Molecule, Sucker Punch, Polyphony Digital and more.
YB Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia, stated the following about the new studio:
“With this establishment, Malaysia will be working closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios to create more opportunities for the local and regional games industry. Together, we will work to uplift creative talents in Malaysia and even establish a partnership with our local educational partners. This is to ensure that accelerated growth of the industry in our country will be supported.”
The newly appointed PlayStation CEO and President, Jim Ryan, gave a statement on the new studio’s opening: “Impressive talent, a vibrant game ecosystem, and support from the government are key reasons why we have decided to take our partnership with Malaysia to the next level.”
It doesn’t look like this studio will be developing its own games any time soon. However, it will be good for the other first-party developers to have some extra support now that Guerrilla Games’ Herman Hulst has been appointed as the Head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios.
PlayStation’s new development studio in Malaysia will open in 2020.
