As many of you may have found out already through other outlets, perhaps even our sister sites, PSE’s parent organization, Enthusiast Gaming, has acquired The Escapist. This video game publication was previously owned by Defy Media. The former editor-in-chief of The Escapist, Russ Pitts, is returning to the magazine after his departure to launch Polygon in 2011.
“Escapist Magazine holds a special place in my heart as the place where I started my career in games. Enthusiast truly gets what makes game communities special and is fully invested in getting this right. The opportunity to join with Enthusiast to help bring Escapist back to its original cultural relevance is a huge opportunity not only for me and my team, but for the many fans of Escapist who have been so supportive of the brand for over 13 years,” Pitts said.
Pitts explains what The Escapist will be all about in his Medium post on the recent news of the acquisition.
“We’re leaving politics at the door,” Pitts said. “Most of us have thoughts about politics. Just like most of you. And, because we’re creators, those thoughts might show up in our work. Avoiding that would be unnatural. That said, I can promise you no one here will share their politics in an attempt to convince you yours are wrong. And your worth will not be calculated based on whether you’re on the left or on the right. Politics are everywhere, but they don’t have to be everything. We’re going to focus on what’s fun, and we hope you’ll join us in that,” he added.
Menashe Kestenbaum, is the founder of Nintendo Enthusiast and CEO of the parent organization, Enthusiast Gaming. He issued a statement on The Escapist joining the Enthusiast network of sister sites covering all facets of the gaming industry.
“The acquisition of Escapist is instrumental as we continue to grow our network of gamers. Escapist represents long form and intellectual content generation and will be another flagship platform in our network,” said Kestenbaum.
With these new developments, all of us here at Enthusiast Gaming and The Escapist family look forward to providing all the latest news, reviews, and previews for all to enjoy. With The Escapist and Enthusiast Gaming being owned by the same company, you can stay tuned for the latest the video game industry has to offer!
