A long-awaited feature is finally about to be rolled out for all PlayStation 4 users: the ability to change your PlayStation Network ID. This feature will not be available for PS3 and PS Vita users.
The change can be made either on the console itself by heading to Settings – Account Management – Account Information – Profile – Online ID. You can also make the change via Sony’s official website.
Get creative, but be careful
Before you immediately go ahead and edit that name you probably made six years ago and are quite embarrassed to still have today, make sure your brand-new name is something you really, really like. That’s because while the first ID edit is free, any subsequent change after that is going to run you $9.99 USD/CAD. PS Plus members get a slight discount for $4.99 USD/CAD, but the point is still that you’ll only get one free opportunity to make a new ID. Reverting back to an old ID, however, will be free should you want to do so.
Another caveat with the new ID change is that not every single PS4 game is going to support it. Sony has mentioned that only games published on or after April 1, 2018, will support this feature. So, that leaves out four years worth of games (2013-2017), unfortunately. Not every eligible game has been tested, but a list of tested games has been made available.
If you require more info, the official announcement over on the PlayStation Blog has a list of FAQs which should help.
